RECIPE CLUB CLASSES
PRESENTED BY KATHY NEWELL
9 weeks straight every Monday 11 am to 12 noon - Starting April 30th
Class will discuss, taste, and take a written recipe booklet home from the program each time. This class does not get any better! Every week for the next 9 weeks, we will choose a different recipe subject. All recipes are simple and can help you when you need a quick dish for that party or church dinner. Come join and taste with us. The only requirement is for you to bring your favorite recipe on the subject, written on a 3 x 5 index card (one side only – use 2 cards if necessary). We will copy everyone’s recipe and you will have even more ideas to take home! Please sign up by 5/19/12.

Award-winning New York based Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher performs a diverse program of music from four centuries.
This concert will be part of Peter Fletcher’s national tour. Audience-friendly repertoire will include Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring from Cantata No. 147 as well as the Chaconne in D minor by J. S. Bach; two works from Maurice Ravel’s exquisite Mother Goose Suite; Francisco Tarrega’s ever popular Recuerdos de la Alhambra; two exciting crowd pleasers by Spanish composer Joaquin Turina; Grieg’s Chanson de Solveig from Peer Gynt; and music of Praetorius, Ponce and Reusner.
The program will culminate with Koyunbaba, by composer/guitarist Carlo Domeniconi. This is one of the most unique and exciting works in the classical guitar repertoire.
Steven Rings of The American Record Guide wrote: “He has a strong technique, a consistent tone, and a strong interpretive imagination.” Peter Burwasser of Fanfare Magazine proclaimed: “Fletcher plays it all with a gracious virtuosity that makes for a very pleasing hour plus of unaffected musical poetry.” His CDs will be available for purchase at the program. The library has two of his CDs; you may ask for them. Please sign up by May 22.
ART OF CALLIGRAPHY CLASS
PRESENTED BY DENNIS VIAR
6 weeks every Thursday 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. - starting May 24th
Dennis Viar will be taking his new and experienced students further into the art of beautiful writing. He will be teaching the basic characters of Black Lettering, as well as exploring other types of Calligraphy. You will be using your creative imagination by combining two or more of your artistic talents. The class will be learning why and how to add illumination to their art projects. You will need to bring your own supplies because each student will be choosing the medium they wish to be working with in the class. You may choose to use India ink with calligraphy ink pens, chisel point markers, watercolors, or acrylic paints. There is a plethora of crafts that can be combined with calligraphy.
Be sure to bring the basic supplies that you will be working with to class: paints and watercolors, drawing paper, a soft lead or #2 pencil will be used for sketching and lay out design. Mistakes happen, so bring a Pink Pearl Eraser, also a ruler, and small set of watercolor brushes. The chisel point type brushes we will be using are ¼", 3/8", ½"; they will be used for lettering. Acrylic paints and paintbrushes can be used in the class and they lend themselves well with watercoloring papers, wooden boards, glass, plaster plaques, and wallpaper. Watercolor pencils or colored pencils can be used to do small lettering, fine outlining, and accenting. Your project can be entirely done with colored pencils. Ball point pocket ink pens now come in a multitude of permanent colors and they can be purchased at many businesses here in town.
Also, I would recommend an apron to be used to protect your clothing from the permanent inks, water and acrylic color paints, and anything else that would damage your clothing.
Please note that June 21st is skipped due to another library program at that time.

Kathy Newell has selected some of our “original boyz from the hood” who have been or are a part of serving our community. She has taken their picture and then done a special pencil drawing of 24 different men. All the men have lived or now live in Starke and Pulaski Counties except one. The pictures will be on display from June 4 - 15, 2012. The first three persons who get the most correct answers will win a prize. There will be a “hint list” attached to each picture to help you guess the correct answer. Winner’s names will be posted on the Starke County Public Library website June 18th, and announcements will possibly be on both WKVI and the Chamber of Commerce websites around the same time.. Be sure to take a look at our display and enter your best guess.
